Do you want to offer coupons to customers who are making a repeat purchase of a product? e.g. You could offer a coupon for any repeat purchase; or, perhaps you are selling products that come with a built-in expiry and that customers are likely to want to renew (e.g. the update lifetime for a Premium WordPress plugin!).
